On this sunny February day it’s hard to imagine that summer break is still four months away, but it is…  And it’s not too early to plan a summer full of enrichment activities for your academically gifted or creatively talented child.

We’ve curated a wide selection of enrichments for GATE kids in all grades. But it’s a work in progress: please help improve the Guidebook by sharing your suggestions, edits, and recommendations in the comments below. We’ll work in your ideas and publish a new version soon.

The next meeting of the mighty “Pizza and Pages Book Club” will be Tuesday April 23, 2013. Read “The False Prince,” the first book in a new trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen and then join your fellow readers for a lively discussion over pizza and dessert.

You can borrow The False Prince from the library (of course) or buy a copy from The Depot or Amazon.

This club is getting popular — Meeting #3 just took place, with our biggest attendance ever: sixteen middle schoolers, boys and girls, came on Tuesday evening to discuss a really good book and enjoy each others’ insights. Anxiety in Adolescents – parent education Feb 7

Our friends in the It Takes A Village Special Education PTA are holding a parent education event next week that could apply to all families:

Anxiety in Adolescents

Dr. Keith Sutton will discuss stress, anxiety, and anxiety disorders in adolescents and children. You’ll learn how anxiety develops, practical tips on how to help your child with their anxiety, and when to get outside help.

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. has been working with adolescents for over 14 years and works with general stress and anxiety, as well as anxiety disorders such as phobias, OCD, trauma, and other anxiety disorders.  He is the director of the Bay Area Center for Anxiety and Past President of the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California.

Super Saturdays at Dominican University start Feb 2

UPDATE: Dominican University had to cancel Super Saturdays for Feb-Mar 2013 because of low enrollment.  :-(  But they’ll try again to offer Super Saturdays this Fall and Winter, and the regular Summer Odyssey program (July 15-26) will proceed as scheduled.

Great news: The much-loved Summer Odyssey program at Dominican University* is expanding to offer Saturday morning enrichments starting in February.

Super Saturdays will begin with your choice of five classes for GATE kids in grades 4-8, held from 9am-noon on four Saturdays (2/2, 2/9, 2/23, 3/2):

  • Rocketry (for grades 6-7-8)
  • Animal Art (6-7-8)
  • Write and Publish Your Own Book (4-5-6)
  • The Art and Science of the Microscope (4-5)
  • Songwriting (4-5-6)

In addition to being a fun project-based learning experience, it’s a great way to build your GATE peer group.

Common Core Math Information Night 12/5 & 6

A parent who attended last night’s presentation on Common Core Math standards strongly recommends the event. Two more sessions will be given:

Wed Dec 5, 6-8pm at Del Mar Middle School, 105 Avenida Miraflores, Tiburon
Thu Dec 6, 6-8pm at Bacich School, 699 Sir Francis Drake, Kentfield

Common Core is the new (almost) national curriculum, and the MVSD views it as their framework for all future in-class differentiation. How CC affects ICD is critically important to all our gifted students — and for that matter, to all students who learn differently.
